Gharial and Mugger Crocodile in Corbett

The rivers of Corbett hold two very different crocodilians, and the slender-snouted gharial is the one that surprises people most.

Two species

The gharial has a long, narrow snout adapted to catching fish and is often seen basking on sandbars. The mugger has a broad snout and is more adaptable, using pools and reservoirs.

Where to look

Ramganga river stretches and sandbars in the Dhikala area are usually mentioned. Sightings are best in the cooler months when animals bask, but nothing is guaranteed (confirm with us).

Distance matters

Never approach or allow children near river edges. Keep binoculars ready.
